Impact play is any play that involves striking the body for pleasure – from a playful spanking to a long session with a flogger. It's one of the most popular parts of BDSM, and one of the easiest to start with. It's also one where knowing a little anatomy makes the difference between a great evening and an injury.
This guide covers where it's safer to aim, the common tools from gentlest up, and how to run a first scene that both of you will want to repeat.
Two sensations
Thud and sting
Players talk about two kinds of sensation. Thud is deep and spreading, like a heavy massage – broad paddles and soft floggers give it. Sting is sharp and on the surface – crops, canes and thin straps give it. Most people prefer one, and most good scenes mix both.
Where it's safer
Where to aim, where never to
| Area | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Buttocks – the lower, fleshy part | Safer | Plenty of muscle and padding, and the classic target for a reason. |
| Upper backs of the thighs | Safer | Well padded, though more sensitive than the buttocks – go lighter. |
| Upper back, beside the shoulder blades | With care | Muscle over bone. Floggers only, never directly on the spine. |
| Lower back | Avoid | The kidneys sit close under the skin with little muscle to protect them. |
| Spine and tailbone | Avoid | Bone and nerves right at the surface. |
| Head, face and neck | Avoid | Easy to injure, and nothing is worth that risk. |
| Stomach and chest | Avoid | Organs with little protection over them. |
| Joints – knees, elbows, backs of the knees | Avoid | Bone, tendon and nerves close together. |
When in doubt, stay on the buttocks and the upper backs of the thighs.
The tools
Six implements, gentlest first
| Implement | Feels | For |
|---|---|---|
| Your hand | Warm, thuddy, personal | Everyone's first – and you feel how hard you're going |
| Paddle | Broad and thuddy, with a sharper edge as it gets harder | A step up once hand spanking feels familiar |
| Flogger | From soft and thuddy to stingy, depending on the falls | Rhythm, warm-ups and the upper back |
| Strap or belt | Sharper than a paddle, can sting a lot | Players with some experience |
| Riding crop | A small, precise sting | Taps and accents rather than a long session |
| Cane | Intense sting, quick to mark | Experienced players only – learn in person first |
A first scene
Five steps to getting it right
- Warm up.Start with light pats and rubs and build slowly over several minutes. A warm-up lets the body adjust, so more intense strokes later feel good rather than simply hurt.
- Build in steps, not leaps.Raise the intensity a little at a time, and come back down between rises. Rhythm matters as much as force.
- Keep checking in.Ask for a colour or a number from one to ten. Watch breathing and body language too – and if you're unsure, ask.
- Bring it down gently.Finish with lighter strokes and touch rather than stopping dead, then move straight into aftercare.
Marks and skin
Redness, bruises and broken skin
- Agree on marks beforehand. Some people love them; others need to change at the gym on Monday. Both are fine – just decide first.
- Redness usually fades within hours. Bruising can appear later, sometimes not until the next day, and take a week or more to go.
- Broken skin means stop. Clean it, cover it, and check it over the following days.
- Keep your implements to yourselves. Anything that touches broken skin shouldn't be shared, and porous materials like leather can't be fully cleaned – give each person their own.
Your health
When to talk to a doctor first
Some conditions and medicines make bruising and bleeding far more likely – blood thinners among them – and some injuries or skin problems change what's safe. If either of you has anything like that, talk to a doctor before you play. Never play after drinking: judgement and the ability to feel what's happening both go first.
Afterwards
Aftercare for impact
- Hold them, talk quietly, and check how they're feeling – physically and otherwise.
- Look over the areas you struck and check for broken skin.
- Have water and something to eat ready; impact takes more energy than it looks.
- Check in again the next day. Feeling low after an intense scene is common, and the aftercare guide covers what helps – for tops as well as bottoms.
Impact questions
Straight Answers.
Where is it safe to spank someone?
The lower, fleshy part of the buttocks and the upper backs of the thighs. Avoid the lower back, spine, tailbone, joints, head and neck.
What's the best implement for beginners?
Your hand. You can feel how hard you're hitting, and it's the easiest way to learn rhythm before moving to a paddle or a soft flogger.
How do I stop impact play leaving marks?
Warm up slowly, use broad implements rather than thin ones, keep the intensity moderate and check in often. Even so, some people mark easily.
What's the difference between thud and sting?
Thud is a deep, spreading sensation from broad implements; sting is sharp and on the surface, from thin ones like crops and canes.
Should I learn to use a cane on my own?
No. Canes mark and can break the skin easily – learn from an experienced player in person before using one.
