A Dominant leads – in a single scene or across a whole relationship – and carries the responsibility that comes with leading. The control is given, never seized: a submissive hands it over and can take it back at any time. That trade is what people mean by power exchange.
The submissive sets the limits. The Dominant works inside them.
Your first time leading
A first scene, step by step
- Pick one activity you understand. Not five. One, done well, beats a menu done nervously.
- Agree a short scene.Twenty minutes is plenty the first time.
- Ask for a colour as you go.Green, yellow or red – it keeps you both honest.
- Finish earlier than you planned.Ending on a high beats pushing into a low.
- Stay for aftercare, and talk the next day. What worked, what didn't, what next.
In practice
What a good Dom does
- Negotiates before every scene, however well they know the person.
- Knows the risks of what they do, and learns before trying anything new.
- Watches more than they talk – breathing, colour, tension, silence.
- Stops at a safeword without argument or sulking.
- Looks after their partner afterwards, and checks in the next day.
- Owns their mistakes.

Styles of dominance
- Protocol
- Rules, rituals and forms of address. Structure is the pleasure.
- Sensual
- Control through teasing, touch and anticipation rather than pain.
- Sadistic
- Delivering pain or strong sensation to someone who craves it, while reading them closely.
- Service-led
- Directing a submissive's devotion – tasks, care, attention.
- Playful
- Games, challenges and a brat to tame.
Both sides
The other half of the exchange
Power exchange only works when both sides understand it. If you're on the other side, or not sure yet, read about submission – and when you're ready to look for a partner, sub dating covers the questions that reveal a good fit.
Dominant questions
Asked Plainly.
Do I need experience to be a Dom?
You need to be honest about how much you have. Start with what you understand, learn from people who know more, and never fake expertise with someone else's body.
Can women be Doms too?
Yes. Women who dominate often use “Domme”, and plenty of people use either word. See femdom.
What's the difference between a Dom and a top?
A top does the activity in a scene; a Dom holds the authority. Often the same person, but not always.
